Abstract

Segmental lengthening, which has traditionally been described as a marker of emotion, is studied in this article from the perspective of prosodic-discourse studies on a sample taken from a larger corpus of public speech in Spanish. The authors try to seek systemic prosodic patterns underlying the ocurrence of speech acts where segment length –vocalic as well as consonantal– is present. An acoustic analysis of the samples provides a tentative taxonomy of the phenomenon.
